'Monday 1 January 1980. Writing after a late breakfast on New Years Day. Hard frozen snow all over Falmouth. It came on the night before New Year's Eve, and has stayed since. There are no cars moving round the town, roads everywhere are blocked and movement is slow and difficult. We went out this morning to walk to the beach, partly to see the ship wrecked on Maenporth beach, but we turned back after Gyllingvase beach. Slow waking. Last night, New Year's party with Francis Hewlett kept up until 3'.
