Artist statement:

'Large ceramics may be thrown in two or three pieces and joined. Left to dry for several days, then dipped in slip (liquid clay) which is usually white, but occasionally coloured with oxides. Left to dry for two or three weeks. The painting is mostly done using coloured oxides, and there is often drawing or cutting through to the clay beneath (sgraffito). When dry, the piece is fired in the kiln to a temperature of 1000 degrees centigrade (biscuit firing). When it is cooled it is dipped in or brushed with glaze, and fired again to a temperature of 1060 to 1100 degrees centigrade. Occasionally it is fired a third time.'
