Born in South Africa to Welsh parents. Came to England in 1920s, studied at Huddersfield and (after war service in Navy) the RCA (1956-50). Work influenced by European gestural and 'informal' painting. From 1956 to 1965 opened and ran the New Vision Centre Gallery at which he gave countless young artists, many from overseas, their first London shows. He exhibited widely in England and abroad and his work is in many public collections including Tate.
