Margaret Mellis

Margaret Mellis (1914-2009)

Born in China to Scottish parents. Returned to Scotland aged 1. Studied art in Edinburgh. Married art theorist and painter Adrian Stokes, moved to Carbis Bay close to St Ives, 1939. From 1950 she lived in Suffolk with her second husband Francis Davison. Her work was diverse from constructivistpictures in the 1940s under the influence of Nicholson and Gabo, through still life and semi-abstract paintings of the 1950s and 60s, geometric abstracts of the 1970s small flower pictures on paper in the 1980s and driftwood constructions in the 80s and 90s.
